"The Waxing Moon", Austrian painting by Selina Javaid

Set in her mother’s homeland, The Waxing Moon is the reimagined and hopeful place, Bad Gastein in Austria. The naive style suggests nostalgia whilst hinting toward a discordant friction as the rise of far-right looms. Selina Javaid often seeks to explore sense of place in her work, and her
experiments with collage in this piece show both a warmth and disconnect with home.

About the Artist

Selina Javaid (selinajavaid.com) is a North London based artist educator of Austrian and Indian heritage. Selina has exhibited her paintings and cyanotypes in exhibitions around London including with the Federation of British Artists at Mall Galleries and her photography and video work internationally including New York, Koln, Budapest, Cairo and Yogyakarta. She teaches art classes from her home studio in Southgate, educates teenagers in a state school and squeezes in her art practice and commissions whilst caring for her beloved two young children.
